Dong Thai is an ancient village located in Tung Anh Commune, Duc Tho District, Ha Tinh Province (now Duc Tho Commune, Ha Tinh Province). It is the only village in Ha Tinh Province recorded in Vietnam’s Scholarly Villages. During the monarchical period, Dong Thai produced 11 doctoral degree holders and many Huong cong and Cu nhan laureates, among whom the most notable figures were Dinh nguyen Doctor and Can Vuong patriot Phan Dinh Phung (1847-1895), and Cu nhan Dien Mau Quan Cong Hoang Cao Khai (1850-1933). The village still preserves a communal house built around 1885, within which stands a stone stele engraved in 1899 that reflects the life and career of Hoang Cao Khai—a highly controversial figure in modern Vietnamese history. This article focuses on examining the information recorded on this stele in order to contribute to a clearer understanding of Dien Mau Quan Cong Hoang Cao Khai.
