Discourse markers, such as well, you know, so, and right, are ubiquitous in everyday spoken English, yet they are often perceived as semantically empty elements. Adopting a Conversation Analysis (CA) approach, this study investigates the roles and functions of discourse markers in casual interactions between speakers. By analyzing naturally occurring dialogues and conversations from the subtitled film Mune, the study examines how these markers contribute to the organization of talk, turn-taking, the expression of speaker attitudes, and the establishment of interpersonal relationships. The findings show that discourse markers are multifunctional pragmatic resources: they signal hesitation, emphasize or elaborate points, seek agreement, create cohesion, and facilitate smooth topic transitions. The study highlights the importance of discourse markers in enhancing conversational fluency and mutual understanding. It also contributes to the study of English pragmatics in spoken discourse and offers implications for language teaching, particularly in raising learners’ awareness of pragmatic strategies for effective everyday communication in the context of globalization.
