The epic of M’nong (ot ndrong) is a cultural heritage of the M’nong ethnic group as well as that of the Vietnamese nation. In this article, the M’nong epic is studied from two perspectives: first, in the performing context, ot ndrong cannnot be performed without the epic rhapsodes; second, in the relationship with the community, ot ndrong is associated with the customs, beliefs and cultural identity of the M’nong ethnic group. Ethnographic fieldwork method is applied in this study, combined with data analysis. The contribution of the article is to indicate the specific features of the epic rhapsodes in M'nong community, and to interpret the communal culture hidden in M’nong people. The study therefore raises a voice of preserving ot ndrong in particular as well as the M’nong cultural values in general.
