The chocolate hind Cephalopholis boenak is a fish species residing mainly in the sea areas with coral reefs at the depth from 1m to 64m, including the seas of Vietnam. However, its morphological and genetic characteristics have not been described in details in Vietnam. This research provided the morphological description and the sequence of mitochondrial 16S RNA gene on the basis of the samples collected in the coastal sea of Tinh Gia District, Thanh Hoa Province.
The morphological taxonomical characteristics of Cephalopholis boenak were described as following: Complete lateral line with 49-51 scales; operculum with 3 flat strong spines; preoperculum with a conspicuosly inclined serrated upper edge; dorsal fin with 9 spines and 16 to 17 rays (D IX, 16-17); anal fin with 3 spines and 8 rays (A III, 8); body with 8 dark brown bands; the dorsal fin, anal fin, and caudal fin with white edges. The similarity of mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene was 98.6 - 100% in comparison with those sequences...
