From the results of a survey of students at universities in Vietnam on the use of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI), the paper proposes three groups of measures to develop critical thinking. Students need to be aware of the benefits and potential risks of Gen AI, practice critical thinking operations such as information verification, questioning skills, comprehensive information analysis and evaluation, comparing sources, self-assessment, and decision-making. Instructors should employ active teaching methods and appropriate assessment techniques when integrating Gen AI in the classroom. Educational authorities should promptly issue codes of conduct and guidelines for the ethical and responsible use of Gen AI.
