Problem-solving ability and creativity are one of the key competencies needed to improve for high school students, according to Vietnam’s new education curriculum. This article examines current situation of the implementation of active teaching methods in order to improve that competency for Organic Chemistry students at 13 Vietnamese high schools. Interviews, investigations and statistics are applied in data process. The findings suggest that the level of using active teaching methods to foster the competency in Organic Chemistry classes is currently still low; also, the teachers’ awareness of this issue is not exhaustive. This fact raises the concern of follow-up studies on measures to enhance students’ problem-solving ability and creativity in an effective way.
