English - medium instruction at a university in Vietnam: lecturers’ readiness, challenges, and training needs

The use of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in teaching disciplinary subjects has become an inevitable trend in the internationalization of higher education. This study investigates lecturers’ readiness, challenges, and training needs regarding the implementation of EMI at Danang University of Medical Technology and Pharmacy. A qualitative research design was adopted, employing semi-structured interviews with fifteen lecturers who had completed postgraduate programs abroad and had experience using English in their academic studies and research. The results reveal that EMI offers considerable opportunities for improving teaching quality and promoting international integration; however, it also poses challenges related to linguistic competence, teaching methodology, and learning resources. The findings underscore that successful EMI implementation requires a holistic approach combining linguistic training, pedagogical innovation, resource provision, and professional support....
